ADVANCED HEALTH CAREERS
ADVANCED ACUTE CARE NURSING ASSISTANT - (PRE-NURSING)
DRUMRIGHT CAMPUS ONLY This career major is ideal for the high school student who is interested in nursing. The occupational outcome is a long-term care certified nursing aide that is qualified to work in long-term care facilities. This career major also allows the completer the opportunity to gain advanced standing credit in a licensed practical nurse career major.
HEALTH UNIT CLERK
DRUMRIGHT CAMPUS ONLY A health unit clerk typically will work with visitors, patients, nursing staff and physicians in a nursing unit of hospital and skilled nursing facilities. As a vital member of the healthcare team, the health unit clerk is responsible for working closely with health professionals providing communication support to nursing services and ancillary departments in the collection and dissemination of patient data, prioritizing orders and tasks, ensuring patient confidentiality and performing routine quality assurance on charts. Effective communication, prioritizing and multi-tasking of duties are essential skills utilized in this position.
DRUMRIGHT CAMPUS ONLY Students learn the state and federal laws concerning controlled substances, classification of drugs, and pharmaceutical math. Medical and pharmaceutical terminology will be covered including how to properly pronounce drug names. Aseptic techniques in the pharmacy, compounding skills as well as hospital and long term care pharmacy environment are covered. Students focus on critical customer service and employability skills necessary to succeed in a retail pharmacy. An internship is a vital component of this major. It is recommended that students obtain the pharmacy technician certification upon completion.
PHYSICAL THERAPY AIDE
DRUMRIGHT CAMPUS ONLY Physical therapy aides help physical therapists provide treatment that improves patient mobility, relieves pain, and prevents or lessens physical disabilities of patients. Physical therapy aides perform a variety of tasks under the direction and supervision of physical therapists as part of the patient’s treatment. This might involve exercise, massage, electrical stimulation, paraffin baths, hot and cold packs, traction, and ultrasound. Physical therapy aides record the patient’s responses to treatment and report the outcome of each treatment. The duties of aides include some clerical tasks, such as ordering depleted supplies, answering the phone, and filling out insurance forms and other paperwork. The extent to which an aide performs clerical tasks depends on the size and location of the facility.
STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINING AIDE
DRUMRIGHT CAMPUS ONLY Student athletic training aides provide first aide and/or emergency care to athletes in various. An aide will perform an assortment of duties under the direction of an Athletic Trainer. They will recognize, evaluate, and provide care to athletic injuries including taping, and fitting equipment according required safety regulations. They may collaborate with coaches and other professionals coordinating and managing assessment and reporting progress of recovering athletes. Student athletic training aides possess excellent communication and organizational skills as well as perform general administrative tasks.
DRUMRIGHT CAMPUS ONLY Veterinary assistants feed and bathe animals, administer medication as prescribed by the veterinarian, and assist the veterinary team with animal nursing techniques. Students learn to do basic office procedures and how to provide large and small animal care, including how to perform diagnostic procedures. Students practice in a variety of settings as chosen by the instructor. Upon completion of this career major, students have experience and skills necessary to become employed in a veterinary clinic or hospital.
