POSITION SUMMARY

The Phlebotomist reports to the MLT Lab Director and serves patients by identifying the best method for retrieving specimens, preparing specimens for laboratory testing; performing screening procedures. Performs phlebotomy in a prompt and reliable manner according to established hospital and departmental policies. Participates in QA reviews and supports the hospital laboratory in meeting CLIA accreditation standards. See Competency Evaluation for specific tasks and duties.

PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Duties
Adhere to all policies of the organization, including (but not limited to) job description, certification/licensure requirements, mission statement, HIPAA, confidentiality standards and patient’s rights.  
Actively engage and stay up to date with organization’s communications and directives. 
Print labels for morning draws, do all morning draws and EKG’s as ordered 
Collect and tag specimens exactly as outlined in each medical requisition.
Properly package each specimen and ensure that every specimen is delivered to the lab in a timely manner.
Maintain an organized and clean work area based on state health laws and the guidelines of our medical organization.
Answer patient questions regarding collection techniques and offer additional resources on the collection process if a patient requests them.
Decipher the best method for drawing blood depending on the specific patient.
Expect to work with a large number of patients varying in age and health status.
Be friendly, courteous and sympathetic when it comes to working with patients.
Keep your phlebotomy station well-organized at all times.
Practice infection control standards at all times when working with patients and equipment.
Clean/stock the draw room and trays, make note of any supplies that need to be ordered and write them on the board.
Wipe down all surfaces in the lab.
Check/change out all biohazard containers. Take the full containers to the bio building and place them in a bag then into the containers.
Draw all outpatients, inpatients, and ER’s throughout shift, also all EKG’s as ordered.
Check communications log. Print and fax results that have failed to send. This needs to be completed every couple of hours throughout shift.
Print patient results, as needed, to fax to providers.
Ensure the name on both labels are visible, do not label over label.
Initial, time and date all specimens.
Answer calls coming into Lab.
Properly put away supplies that are received. Write date received and your initials on every individual box. Label supplies with new lot stickers as needed.
Empty shred box.
Other duties as assigned.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE AND EQUIPMENT: 

Blood collection tools –from vacuum collection needles to collection vials, Phlebotomists must be knowledgeable about all of the items needed to successfully draw, store and ship blood collections.

EDUCATIONAL/SKILLS REQUIRED: 

High school diploma/GED required (Associate degree preferred)
Must possess a valid state phlebotomy certification
Legible handwriting is required
Excellent patient service and patient relationship skills
Strong attention to detail
Good communication skills.
Good computer skills.
Ability to work with others as a team to ensure quality patient care.
 

EXPERIENCE:

At least 2 years’ experience in phlebotomy is required for entry level phlebotomy positions.

 

RESPONSIBILITY FOR CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION

This position could have access to patient confidential records and must comply with HIPAA regulations as well as Compliance Policies.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS – PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must have fine motor coordination, clear speech; normal hearing and good visual acuity with ability to distinguish major colors. Must be able, to move readily from one location to another in the hospital and various drawing sites. Medium lifting – generally not more than 50 lbs. Maximum with frequent lifting and / or carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs. May be exposed to communicable diseases.
