Federal law prohibits the use of marijuana for any safety-sensitive employee. This includes truck driving.
DRUG SCREENING: On the first day of class, you must undergo a pre-employment drug screening. All students are subject to random and suspicious drug testing throughout the duration of the program. A positive test or refusal will result in immediate termination from the program.
Per federal regulations, medical marijuana remains a drug listed in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. It remains unacceptable for any safety‐sensitive employee subject to drug testing under the Department of Transportation’s drug testing regulations to use marijuana.
Alcohol or Drug-Related: No conviction within the past five (5) years.
DOT Physical Information:
Here are some of the requirements you will need in hand if the situation pertains to you:
- A complete list of your current prescription medications.
- If you are taking a narcotic, benzodiazepine, or other sedating medications, Form #MCSA-5895 must be completed by your physician.
- If you have diabetes and high blood pressure, you will need your most recent laboratory report. Having diabetes, you will also need your blood sugar readings and your most recent Hgb A1C.
- If you are insulin-dependent, a form must be completed by your primary care physician. It is the “Insulin-Treated Diabetes Mellitus Assessment Form”. Form # MCSA-5870.
- Auditory or visual aids like prescription glasses, contact lenses, and hearing aids that you need while driving. DOT medical examiners will allow you to wear them during vision and hearing assessments.
- If you use a CPAP machine, you will need a record from your CPAP machine showing your usage data for the past 90 days.
- If you have heart issues, you will need a letter from your cardiologist indicating you’re safe to operate a commercial motor vehicle.
- If you’ve had a stroke, a brain tumor, a seizure disorder, or bleeding in the brain, you will need a letter from your neurologist.
